From Jo and Reg Bartlam’s Bedminster to today’s Newbury and Severn Beach, we have always supported the communities we act within. Because of this, we have developed a reputation as a local, responsible, and caring business.
Making a difference in our local areas
Supporting our communities
Doing the right thing for our local area is important. We are proud to support our communities in Newbury and Severn Beach in a number of different ways – from prioritising local employment, to reducing emissions, to creating volunteering opportunities for staff.
We also partner with a number of charitable organisations locally, and our parent company, Fuchs Gruppe, is charitable held. Our Newbury site is leased from the Greenham Trust who are also charitable held,
providing grants to charities within 20 miles of Market Place, Newbury.
By operating with a community first mindset, we believe we are doing good for the areas we call home, and caring for people both inside and outside the business.
Charitable partnerships
We play an active role in supporting the local community of Bristol through 4 key charity partnerships.
-
Frank Water
Bristol based charity Frank Water provide safe water and sanitation to marginalised communities in India and Nepal, and we’ve worked with them since 2013. In 2022, we raised £10,000 through the sale of our BART branded products, and contributed 33 hours of employee time at events throughout the year.
-
The Square Food Foundation
We donate resources, herbs, spices, and ingredients to the Square Food Foundation, a local charity providing cookery lessons to disadvantaged young people. The lessons aim to enable these young people need to gain sustainable sources of employment. We’ve donated 25 hours of employee expertise to this initiative, and provided use of our development kitchen for the training school.
-
St Pauls Carnival
St Pauls Carnival in Bristol is an annual Caribbean carnival that began as a way of improving relationships between European, African, Caribbean, and Asian inhabitants of the St Pauls area of Bristol. We support the carnival’s education and engagement programme, and have donated £5,000 and 14 hours of employee time.
-
Fareshare
We’ve worked with Fareshare for a number of years to redistribute edible food to those who need it. Our support has included donating 1,500 BART Manupur Masala tins, as well as providing our expertise to create recipe ideas to use up vegetables that would otherwise go to waste, turning them into delicious, nourishing meals.
The herbs and spice manufacturer that puts people first
From day one, we’ve been putting our people first. We know that our duty as an employer is to maintain a healthy, supportive working environment, where everyone is treated fairly and has access to equal opportunity.
-
Cultivating a happy workplace
We are proud to be a responsible, caring employer. Our working environments are welcoming, inclusive, and safe for all employees, with equal opportunities for all, and open communication channels between all levels of seniority.
In 2022, a quarter of our workforce were promoted, and 78% say they enjoy working with us. Despite these impressive stats, we’re always striving to do better because we care about each and every member of our team.
Together, we are bringing sustainable flavour to the UK herbs, spice, and ingredients market, and we couldn’t be prouder of our team. Equal opportunities, highly diverse, ethically minded – this is a workplace driven by purpose and always committed to excellence.
-
Worker safety
At The BART Ingredients Company, worker safety is paramount. We make sure our workplaces are safe for all employees by providing regular health and safety training, having our working conditions independently audited, and championing workers’ rights. We also make sure there is no forced labour anywhere in our supply chain, operate an anti-bribery policy, and have clear whistleblowing procedures.
-
Progression potential
In the last year, a quarter of our employees were promoted. This impressive statistic demonstrates our continual investment in our people. We give every employee the opportunity to progress within the company and forge a long term career with us, offering performance reviews, personal development plans, access to training, and an internal management ‘buddy’ system.
-
Benefits and support
Employee wellbeing is business wellbeing. To make sure our people feel happy, healthy, and supported, we offer a comprehensive benefits package. From subsidised herbs and spices, to long service awards, to our exclusive discount platform, we look after our employees. We also have a cycle to work scheme, a holiday purchase scheme, and annual salary life assurance. Other important benefits include company health insurance, our employee assistance programme, and access to a remote EZ GP service.
-
Equal opportunities
In a recent survey, 76% of our employees said we were an equal opportunity employer. We truly see our workforce as a family, and cultivate an inclusive, diverse, multi-cultural environment, with 17 different nationalities, and a higher proportion of employees of non-white ethnic origin than the local communities we serve. We have zero tolerance for discrimination and continually monitor our performance. We also promote gender equality across the business, with an impressive 37% of management positions held by women, and targets in place for our strategic suppliers to achieve the same.
